Elina, Daughter of the Steppe, aka Elina of the Ridiculously Long Name, has been sent to kill the White Dragon Queen, but is captured by the Captain of the Queen' s Guard, Lord Celyn. He presents her to Queen Rhiannon, who is intrigued and tells Celyn to take her somewhere safe as the Queen' s very protective consort, Bercelak, arrives. Celyn takes Elinar to the southern kingdom's jail and promptly forgets about her. Eight months later Queen Annwyl finds out about her, has Celyn retrieve her and and then requests that Elina to return home and ask her ruler, Anne Atli, to meet with Annwyl about forming an alliance. But first Elina will have to meet with the tribal leader, Glebovicha Shestakova, who sent her on a blatantly obvious suicide mission. And Celyn is tasked with accompanying her and keeping her safe, while in the background religious fanatics begin making their moves to overthrow the two kingdoms.

While this full length book could possibly stand alone, Dragon Kin is definitely a series that needs to be read, and read from the beginning, and reread. It includes laugh out loud humor, suspense, a very large cast of characters, their relationships with each other and a story line that continues to build over time. Aiken constructs very complex kingdoms with strong characters and she writes one of the best paranormal series I have read. She is one of the first authors to make my auto-buy list and she remains there. I am never disappointed. She also writes under the name Shelly Laurenston and her Pride series is another must read.

Light My Fire Dragon Kin GA Aiken Books Reviews

3-3.5 stars

This was an enjoyable story. I liked Celyn and Elina and their story was good overall but there were a few things that left me with mixed feelings on the rating (between 3-4 stars).

Elina is a rider of the Steps, a territory outside of Annwyl's Kingdom (or should it be Queendom?). The society of the Steps is matriarchal and Elina's tribal leader thinks she's weak because although she's a skilled warrior, Elina doesn't like to kill needlessly. Elina is sent on a mission to kill the dragon queen, a task that's nothing more than a suicide mission.

Celyn is a dragon of the Cadwaladr Clan, son of Ghleanna and Bram (book #0.4, Dragon on Top). Celyn is a skilled warrior and has done well enough to be made a Captain and leader of Queen Rhiannon's personal guard. Although Celyn is a skilled warrior, he does tend to have a curious mind and asks questions...a lot.

Elina is making her way to Rhiannon when she's picked up by Celyn. He takes Elina to the Queen and they quickly realize that Elina really has no interest in killing and was basically sent on a suicide mission. Celyn is told to put her someplace secure so he takes her to the local jail (in Annwyl's capital) and tell them to hold her and keep her safe. Other things come up and both Celyn and the Queen forget all about her until 7 months later. At that point, issues arise that make it beneficial for Annwyl to make an alliance with the people of the Steps. Remembering Elina, they figure maybe she can help and send Celyn to retrieve her. Elina's time "in jail" has actually been far from hard but regardless, she's still pissed about being left there so long.

Although she failed on her quest, since she wasn't killed, Elina feels she's honor bound to help. She agrees to go back to the Steps to try to step up a meeting. Celyn is sent with her to make sure she stays safe on the trip. Elina looks down on anyone not from the Steps, even the dragons and particularly Celyn...calling him "the dolt" through pretty much the whole book. Celyn's attempts to talk to Elina were very annoying for her but he's attractive and so she does end up propositioning him. Or course a relationship does eventually develop but the way it comes about seemed a bit off to me at times. Maybe this was because of the society that Elina came from...it seemed to make her not very affectionate or demonstrative since they tended to treat their men like favored pets/slaves. Still, Celyn and Elina do develop feelings for each other and work out a relationship that works for them, ending the story starting a HEA together.

This was an enjoyable story. Elina was a good heroine within the precepts of what her character is supposed to be but there were some parts of that I just wasn't that hot on (but she was in no way an annoying or TSTL heroine). Celyn was a good hero but he had to find himself a bit to get there completely. The series storyline does get advanced nicely in this story, even if there were a couple times I wondered where the heck things were going. Overall, I liked the story and am looking forward to seeing what happens next in the series. )

* note - I listened to the audio version of this story and the narrator did a very good job.
I loved this book! It kept me laughing from start to finish. Elina and her sister's blunt speaking had me rolling on the floor laughing so many times, especially since they are so sincere and not trying to be funny. They just are.

I was prepared to not like Celyn when I was first introduced to his character in Briec's and Talaith's story, because of what happened with Izzy and Èibhear. Even though neither Izzy or Celyn were at fault since they did nothing wrong, I still kind of disliked Celyn because he kept taunting Èibhear about it when he found out. And that doesn't sit well with me! Like why would you brag or taunt someone about that? That really pissed me off. But Celyn redeemed himself, somewhat anyways, in my eyes in this book. I'm not going to into specifics, but the part when he and Èibhear "sort of talk" is when I sort of forgave him for him being a douchebag when that happened.

I had no problems with this book, whatsoever. And I would definitely recommend this book to people. 5 stars!
