Things have gotten ugly in Blaineton, New Jersey. It is in the middle of the Civil War and the abolitionist sympathies of the people in Maggie's boarding house have made them a target for Copperhead forces in their hometown of Blaineton, New Jersey. When the violence threatens to get worse, Maggie's husband Eli proposes that the family move to Gettysburg to help his two sisters aid fugitive slaves. They risk the move, hoping to find some badly-needed peace. But that peace seems far away as Confederate and Union forces march into Pennsylvania. Adjusting to life in a new town is not easy. They also miss Eli and Carson, who are covering the war for the newspaper, as well as Edgar and Patrick who are in the army. Worse yet, there are disturbing rumors. Will Confederate forces really invade Pennsylvania?

Walk By Faith Saint Maggie Series Book 2 Janet R Stafford 9780990835554 Books

I started with Janet Stafford's first book Saint Maggie (which was terrific), but I have to say she outdid herself with Walk By Faith. It's a beautiful, historical (but not tedious in any way), action-filled story of a family facing racism and hatred while trying to see the humanity in an enemy and hang onto their faith during the devastation of the Civil War. Maggie is a wonderful, strong, female character that you won't forget anytime soon - which is actually to be said for all the characters. Janet's underlying story of having - and keeping - one's faith is inspiring and her descriptions of war are accurate and vivid. I highly recommend both Saint Maggie AND Walk By Faith - you so won't be disappointed!

Walk By Faith Saint Maggie Series Book 2 Janet R Stafford 9780990835554 Books Reviews

First of all, I loved Saint Maggie and Walk by Faith was equally as enjoyable! Ms. Stafford showed great skill in giving us historical information and a demonstration of faith without being preaching and boring. The cruelties of the the Civil Wars are deftly touched on with Maggie leading us with her strength and devotion to her family and her faith. This is a book I would definitely recommend.
This is a simple story set in pre-Civil war times about a sincere, religious Christian lady, Maggie, with two teenage daughters, Libby and Frankie, who has been widowed ten years. Because she came from a wealthy family who had influence in the town of Blaineton and she married a man considered by her family to be socially beneath her, when he died, her brother Samuel chose to continually criticize her, and gave her no help. As a result in order to support herself and the girls, she took a large house and converted it into a boardinghouse, plus a residence for her family. She also took in a Negro couple, Nate and Emily, to help her and had three odd boarders, plus Eli Smith, an editor, whom she eventually married.
Maggie was the type of Christian who considered God in her every thought and action and the town was primarily Christian oriented, at least they wore that type of veneer. There was gossip about Maggie because the town folks felt she had such weird boarders. A handsome, charismatic young man, Jeremiah Madison came to town to be the pastor in Maggie’s church. He also boarded with Maggie, but it concerned Maggie that all of the young women were so entranced by him and she felt he was a little liberal in his embracing them. But Maggie put her faith in God that all was right.
Now add to that Maggie falling in love, her concern about this pastor and these young girls, her flaunting in allowing a Black couple to live on her premises, and then secretly taking in Black people as part of the underground railroad. Then stir in Maggie’s beautiful spoiled niece who set her cap for Jeremiath, and married him but is forced to live with him at the boarding house, which is way beneath her social standing became extremely cranky and weepy, making everyone miserable. Add another teenage girl who was formerly her maid, and now also lived at Maggie’s to take care of the niece. Add miscarriages, illness and murder, with much Christian soul searching, and you have an interesting tale of human nature at its best and worse. It is an enjoyable read.
Loved reading this book! Can't wait for Janet's next book!
Book 2 was as interesting as book 1. This time period is a favorite of mine. Looking forward to reading book 3.
I choose to give this ebook five stars for such an enjoyable and learning experience while not having to deal
with the stress of taking test(s) after wards! I enjoying reading your book(s)! I recommend this book for those who are history buffs and those who had not really enjoyed history in school because of having to deal with the egress of taking hard tests without any cheat sheets! This is far better believe me! I received this book free and in exchange I am doing reviews now! Great work Janet. Keep up the great work! By Angela
