FINAL DECISION: I'm split on this book. I loved so much of it because I loved the first two books of the series, but I thought the romance here wasn't nearly as developed or as good as the others in the series.THE STORY: New York graphic artist Shannon Bodine has her life turned upside down when her mother reveals that Shannon is the result of an affair with a married man. Losing both parents in a year and discovering that her entire history was a lie, Shannon feels adrift in her life. When her half sisters in Ireland reach out to her, Shannon decides to travel to Ireland to meet them and see if she can recover her sense of balance in her life. In Ireland, Shannon meets Murphy Muldoon, a man wedded to the land his family has farmed for generations. The attraction between them is immediate although Shannon does not want to get involved in a temporary relationship that she knows will end when she returns to New York.
OPINION: This book frustrates me in many ways. I loved so much about it. As a continuation of the series, I would give the book a very high rating. I loved seeing the couples from the previous books and I enjoyed the resolution of the three sisters' story. That familial part of the book was incredibly satisfying as their relationship developed in this book.
But in many ways the time spent on the developing relationship between Maggie, Brianna and Shannon was robbed from the romance between Shannon and Murphy. Indeed, I think that is why there is an "insta-love" destined element to their romance -- the book couldn't both develop their relationship in a deep fashion and also the sisters' relationship.
The relationships between the couples in the first two books took place over months and thus the sacrifices they agreed to make felt reasonable and natural. Here, Shannon is in Ireland for just over a month but is willing to toss everything away -- it just didn't feel as natural as the other books. Instead, I think the book relied on its paranormal crutch too much to explain the intensity of the relationship.
I loved Murphy -- who is just adorable. A gentle and talented and completely centered man. He knows who he is and is satisfied with his life. He also knows exactly what he wants when he sees Shannon. Shannon was more prickly and more difficult to like (she is similar to Maggie in that sense), but by the end of the book I understood her and even liked her. I especially liked seeing her relationships develop in this book.
The best part of this book is the relationships between the six main characters in the series. Whether it is the women bonding or the men drinking themselves silly or the caring "sister"-"brother" relationships between the men and the women, I loved seeing this family be created. That is the highlight of this series as a whole. This is the creation of the next generation.
But I still find the relationship between Murphy and Shannon to be more shallowly explored than the other two books.
WORTH MENTIONING: Small spoiler that this book has some paranormal elements although it is not the main part of the story.
CONNECTED BOOKS: BORN IN SHAME is the third and final book in the Born in Trilogy. This book should only be read after the first two in the series because it resolves the overarching story in the series.
STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.

Born in Shame Born in Trilogy Book 3 Nora Roberts 9780515117790 Books Reviews
This is the third volume of a reissued trilogy and is focused on the third, yet illegitimate, daughter of Tom Concannon. I ordered it because I found the first two volumes in paperback and wanted to finish the series before this was reissued.
This book was okay-- just not as intriguing, suspenseful or romantic as the first two featuring the older daughters. The building of the relationship between Shannon, the daughter from the U. S. and Murphy, the neighbor who is like a brother to the other girls was to be expected but occurred under rather strange circumstances.
This book does, however, provide closure for the reader about the outcome for the entire family including the Mother of Maggie and Brianna who seems to have been a most unhappy and punitive person. Of the three books, BORN IN ICE was the best - a truly romantic love story but it was nice to know that everyone lived "happily ever after" and you had to read this volume to accept that fact.
Shannon had already lost her father. Her mom was dying from Cancer. Her mother told her before she died that the father she had known all her life was not her true father. Her true father lived in Ireland. It turned her world upside down. Her mom died and she had no one. On the day of the funeral, after her mom was buried, a man came to the house. He asked for her mom and was told what had happened. He let her know that she had two half sisters in Ireland and they wanted to meet her. She turned him down, wanting nothing to do with them.
She decided to go after receiving a letter from one of her sisters there. That is where she met Murphy. He was the neighboring farmer. He was also stunned and tongue-tied. She was the woman of his dreams. He had dreamt about her since he was little and knew she was the one meant for him.
She didn't believe all that and since she was only planning to stay a few weeks, tried to keep him at arms' length. At the same time, getting to know her sisters and their families.
The more persistent Murphy became about them being together...the more she knew she had to go home. But could she leave this enchanted place where she has felt the love of close family and a man who loves her more than anything else.
This is the 3rd and final book in the 'Born in' trilogy. The first was born in fire...about sister Maggie. Born in ice...sister Brianna. These books cover the folklore and legends of Ireland. They make you feel as if you were there. All three are enjoyable and shouldn't be missed.
Third book in this AMAZING series. When I started reading I was wondering who Shannon was going to fall in love with. I knew she was going to fall in love that is the nature of these types of books and its why I read them I don't consider this type of predictability unpleasant but sometimes being able to predict a book can be annoying. I was wondering and then a certain character that has been present in this series since Book One crossed my mind. ( ha ha no spoilers here!) I was excited to realize that I had been correct in my guess. This series was great! It was written in the 90's yet all 3 books feel fresh and relevant and not dated at all. I have been seeing this series forever since I am a Fan of some Nora Roberts books and also some authors that do work that is similar to hers. I was feeling like the whole "Ireland" thing would cause me to not be able to relate to the story, but I was wrong! I loved it! I could practically hear their accents! The third book was a great close to the trilogy and made me a little sad that this amazing ride was over!
