I knocked off one star for Sabatini's attempted destruction of cinematic history.

A rather convoluted plot leading to a predictable conclusion. Excellent language and turn of phrase though. A good read for those who appreciate the intrigue and romance of the French Revolution era.
Noone writes better and with more flair that Rafael Sabatini. His stories and characters are full of color. This was just another timeless classic by a master wordsmith.

If you like this genre, this will keep you greatly entertained.

This is another book that I could not put down, staying up late at night to finish it. Also, I assigned it a priority over doing things around the house on a sunny afternoon. Rafael Sabatini is a great storyteller.
I'm rereading Sabatini this year and find it more complex than expected, for Sabatini was a superb social historian and is able to put one inside the life expereince of another time and social class. This can be an uncomfortable stretch.
Very interesting book. Sabatini shows he can do very well in other, than swashbuckling type novels.

Set in the reign of Louis XIII, Sabatini's "Bardelys the Magnificent; etc." is wholly different from Dumas's "Musketeers" series which preceded it. A favorite in the Court, Bardelys is entrapped by a regrettable wager which he spends the remainder of the book overcoming. Multilinguist Sabatini makes the most of language and is always an enjoyable read.

The edition has some flaws, but is perfectly readable for the price. Put this in your 's attic to have something to read when you want brave heroes, principled heroines, and deeply vile villains, since all get what they deserve. Somebody should do this as a movie again, there is too much scenery chewed.
