The BatPoet Randall Jarrell Maurice Sendak 9780062050847 Books

An unexpected pleasure from a prolific writer most known to the general public for a short poem anthologized in high school literature texts: "The Death of the Ball-Turret Gunner," this story of a tiny brown bat with insomnia leads readers into a natural world rich with personalities and poems. Framed in Maurice Sendak's ("Where the Wild Things Are") marvelous illustrations, "The Bat Poet" proffers an unforgettable fable for souls young and old. I keep a copy on my own bookshelf and have given many as gifts to children and adults.

The BatPoet Randall Jarrell Maurice Sendak 9780062050847 Books Reviews

A favorite from childhood-excellent read
Yup, great GREAT book, and lovely Maurice Sendak pictures...read this book to a rapt group of 4th graders in a poetry section I taught. They LOVED it, educational, fun, good intellectual kids book.
A Sendak illustrated bat book, it doesn't get any batter than this! (awful pun, I know).
A great addition to the bat enthusiast's collection
Beautiful little book, first read it aloud to the family on the way to Victoria from Penticton, so shorter than most chapter books by a long shot. Nice conceit and a spur to writing for anyone teetering on the edge of wondering if their point of view might be worth expressing. Also, the illustrations are charming! Jarrell's book, the Animal Family, is also lovely and unexpected.
Beautiful classic with the best of Maurice Sendak's illustrations.
Utterly fabulous. Needs to be in every child's library.
The story is about a bat who is different from other bats, who wakes during the day to observe the world around him and then writes poems about what he sees. He shares his poems with the creatures he observes and receives varied responses. There is something very touching about this bat and how he puts his thoughts and observations into the poems. Being a person who often doesn't "get" poetry, this gave me insight into why people (or bats) write poetry. And the different ways the other animals responded to the poems was enlightening too. The Bat's poetry effected them not always in ways the bat anticipated. I think this is a very nice book. As I sat down to write this review my 8 year old let me know that he has also been reading it (unknown to me) and he really likes it a lot. At his Montessori school they read a lot of poetry and are learning to write poetry too. So I was very pleased that he decided to give it a try.
